HI All,

We had a wonderful presentation this morning in the Project Lead the Way class at Franklin HS. Project Lead the Way is the Pre-Engineering program that is now in three of our high schools. To read more about Project Lead the Way,click here.

Our very special guest was Axum Aragawi. She is an IGNITE alumni from Ballard HS and now attends Seattle University. She is the National Society of Black Engineers President at Seattle U. It is such a great honor to have her now be a volunteer in IGNITE. This morning, she told the class that she wanted to give back because IGNITE had been such an important inspiration to her. Wow, that is wonderful to hear.

Axum wanted to meet the students from the Project Lead the Way class. She first wants to develop a relationship with the students to see how her club can help the students succeed. She told the students all about NSBE and the opportunities they offer. Axum also spent time talking about opportunities at Seattle U and college in general. Then we spent time brainstorming with the students about what kinds of activities and events they would like to have for their class. This was such an exciting day.

The students came up with this list:

  • Students who are in NSBE at Seattle U as classroom speakers
  • Help on filling out college applications
  • A field trip to Seattle U
  • Some job shadows with adults who are in Engineering and in NSBE.

The students were interested and excited to have this wonderful opportunity. Axum and I will be working on organizing this list and creating these events for the students. I will keep everyone updated on our progress.

I want to thank the very special and wonderful teacher for this class, Mr. Steve Simmons. He is such a great teacher and the students are very fortunate to have him. It is such a pleasure to get to work with him. We will be doing many wonderful collaborations in the future.

Sincerely,
Cathi
