Cleveland High School Presentation, October 22, 2009
Cleveland High School, Seattle, WAThank you to Martine Worrall, Mechanical Engineer, Synapse Product Development. Martine always is able to inspire girls into Engineering. Her passion for what she does and her ability to connect to the girls makes it a special thing to witness. Martine tells her story about finding out about engineering and how she went about getting to where she is today, a highly successful engineer. If anyone can inspire girls to love engineering it's Martine. She is not much older than these girls and they can see themselves in her. Thank you Martine for being such an inspiration. Thank you to Nora Duffy, Intellectual Property. Nora has been inspiring girls in IGNITE for years now. She cares deeply for these girls and wants to show them with determination and drive you can make it anywhere. She inspires with her story and hits the point home that women need to create a career where financial security is important and vital to her growth and independence. Thank you Nora! Thank you to Gina Nakamura, Seattle Central Community College Outreach. Gina does a great job in communicating to the girls how to get the college credit for the technology classes they are taking right now. Also, how to take advantage of the great scholarship that SCCC has to offer paying all 2 years of college. She does such a great job helping girls prepare for the next steps after high school. She comes to most of our Presentation events and is so dedicated to making sure the girls have this valuable information. She does an awesome workshop in IGNITE helping girls prepare for college. Thank you Gina for all you do. Thank you to Trisha Barker, Graduate Seattle Community College Web design program. Trisha has spent the last 4 months building our new website and has volunteered hundreds of hours doing it. It goes live in about 2 weeks. She is coming to all the presentations with a great Power Point Presentation, to show the girls all about the new site, how to use it and what an important vehicle it will be for them to get all the IGNITE resources. She did an outstanding job in presenting the new site and inspiring the girls to use it. Thank you Trisha for all you are doing. We are so fortunate to have you in IGNITE. Your dedication is amazing. I want to thank the exceptional technology teacher at Cleveland who inspires girls’ every day. David Friedle is why teachers are my heroes! He is an example of why teachers deserve more recognition. He is the silent hero each and every day, inspiring the kids to dream big and learn the skills they will need to compete. He is teaching game design, video, web design and much more. He teaches new classes all the time. What he really does is inspire the love of technology in the kids each and every day, but showing them what they can do with it. He is my hero. I want to thank the support we get from the wonderful Principal at Cleveland, Princess Sharif, she is so welcoming and supportive of the IGNITE program. The counselors, Tina Camero and Fanny Austin also help us any way they can. And a big thank you to the front admin staff, Beth Domondon, and Feli Regan, who have been at Cleveland a very long time. They are always helping me with anything I need and I want them to know they are appreciated so much. Thank you to all the staff at Cleveland who want IGNITE at the school and support the girls attending events because they know it’s an important experience in their lives, for their career education and growth as people. As you all can see, each and every event is monumental because it does take a village and IGNITE does that best. We bring together the community, educators and students to show the kids that they are important to us and that if we can support them in their lives and career decisions we have done something that can affect them through their lives. Thank you all for your continued support and involvement in IGNITE. There are so many of you now, and each one of you is what makes IGNITE who we are today. Next, I will share with you the comments from the girls regarding this event. Always the best part! *The things I liked about today's presentation were hearing every woman's story. I also enjoyed hearing about the many opportunities provided by IGNITE. I look forward to job shadowing and applying for internships. I thought this event was perfect and nothing needed to change. *I learned that this event made me want to be in technology. I love making things too and this might just be something for me. The engineering lady really inspired me to learn more about that kind of thing, because she made the iphone and worked on the space needle and it sounds like fun. *I loved that each woman had a different and unique story. I learned that if I write something and put it on the internet, that it is something that is mine, my intellectual property. The event was great! *I loved hearing the presenters and how they shared their stories. They told us how they got where they are today and I thought it was very encouraging! *I loved hearing the women's stories and learned how they got where they are today. *I loved hearing the women's stories. The part about their backgrounds, about school, Microsoft and all that stuff. The meaning of the speech got through really clearly. Showing examples was also great as well. I learned the percentages of women's representation in these career fields and it surprised me. *I also liked to learn that I could raise my grades at Community College and then transfer to the University. I want to learn more and do more IGNITE events. I have so many more questions. *I really liked the Presentation because it gave me a lot of information about technology and about the way to get a scholarship. I look forward to the job shadow. *I loved how the IGNITE members introduced themselves and shared their backgrounds with us. How they got to where they are today. I want to do all of the IGNITE events. *I really liked getting all the information about the jobs and all the opportunities we can have. I really liked the woman with the pink hair, her story about becoming an engineer, it was very interesting. *The testimony of the different career holders. The most interesting thing was all the different careers in technology and engineering. I felt that the event was very successful. *My favorite part was hearing all about how they got into technology and engineering fields. I learned about mechanical engineering. *I liked all the general info we got today. I really liked hearing about the summer programs, and about the website. I am open to trying all the events. *I liked how each woman told us of their life and how they became successful today. I want to do all ignite events. Keep up the good work :) *I enjoyed that everyone introduced who they are- how they background is, I really liked the website and will definitely sign up. I think the most interesting thing I heard today is the Microsoft internship. I love Microsoft! I want to do job shadowing and do all of the events, so please remind us! *I loved all the guests and learned about many types of engineering. I am interested in project engineering. *I liked how the ladies talked about what they do. I learned a lot. The most interesting thing I learned is what web designers do. I am considering web design. The presentation was amazing! I would like to be a part of working for Microsoft and do job shadows with ladies in web design /writing, and journalism. *I like how IGNITE had ladies share their story and many personal stories talking about their experience and passing their knowledge down to us. It was really inspiring. I would say the story from Martine and how she talked about her job, working with many different things. Some of the most interesting things today was our guest had graduated from Cleveland :) I thought this event was really good, I can't think of anything better. I want to do all the IGNITE events. *It was very interesting and I learned a lot. All of the interesting backgrounds the speakers had and how far they came to get where they are now. *Learning about the different types of engineering fields and hearing about the differences in all of the engineering fields. I look forward to job shadowing, internships and field trips. *I liked listening to their life stories. The one lady used to be a gang banger and turned her life around. I liked it. I look forward to job shadowing, field trips and internships. *I really liked hearing the speakers talk about their careers and hearing about their backgrounds. Hearing what they actually do in their jobs. I want to hear more and learn more. I look forward to field trips and learn about more careers. *All the women's stories about their jobs was my favorite part. The free camp at Microsoft is cool and hearing the speakers stories, best part. *I loved learning about the women's lifestyles and how their stories turned out. *I learned that if I need to improve my grades, I can start at a community college like Seattle Central. *I liked how the women who spoke had done a variety of jobs. And they didn't exactly have the best background. Plus there was one speaker who I could relate to 100 percent. I learned that you could get college credits just be taking the technology classes. This event was great. I look forward to more IGNITE events. I hope you enjoyed hearing from the girls. They are so hungry for this program and all we provide. I look forward to doing many more events with these girls. Microsoft is offering us job shadow days this year and we have field trips scheduled for them.
