IGNITE Conference in Spokane, March 4th, 2010
On March 4th, 2010 Spokane Community College hosted the second annual IGNITE conference. Over 85 Girls from 14 local high school and middle schools participated in the county wide event. The girls who attended met with and learned from women who hold working titles such as computer forensic scientist, component engineer, biological scientist, chemistry professor, and application engineer. The conference included seven 25 minute breakout sessions where groups of girls had the chance to participate in activities ranging from making ice cream using energy from a potato to listening to heart and lung sounds on a medical simulation manikin. There was plenty of time for questions and discussion that the girls took complete advantage of. The conference truly inspired young women to think outside the box about careers. Speakers shared their experiences and challenges showing these girls a new idea about these fields of study. The speakers empowered these young women to reach for their dreams, and realize they are fully capable of obtaining them. The success of this event was beyond our expectations and we look forward to the next conference. Photos from the event:
