IGNITE Conference in Spokane, March 4th, 2010

On March 4th, 2010 Spokane Community College hosted the second annual IGNITE conference. Over 85 Girls from 14 local high school and middle schools participated in the county wide event. The girls who attended met with and learned from women who hold working titles such as computer forensic scientist, component engineer, biological scientist, chemistry professor, and application engineer.

"I liked the fact that we had a chance to hear about the life and challenges of experienced women. We had freedom to ask them questions. The most interesting thing I heard was about determination. I learnt that we should always do what we love and be the best in all our endeavours."

HI All,

We had a fantastic day at Seattle Central Community College. The conference is called Glitter and it is put on by the Information Technology Department, at Seattle Central Community College. They have a brand new technology center, if you ever get the chance to go and see it, its awesome!

Women Entrepeneurs and Technology Companies

There was a very interesting article in The New York Times a couple of weeks ago about the challenges faced by women starting their own tech companies. The article is important reading for anyone interested in the ongoing, and often unexpected, biases that women encounter in technology fields. Excerpt:

"What I liked the best about today's event was that I got to see how the house of the future would look like and also technology that would be in the future." HI All, We had a great field trip on Tuesday to Microsoft with 40 girls grades 6-8. They had a fabulous time and learned a lot! They had a tour of the Home of the Future and the Envisioning Center. The girls really were captivated by that experience.

"I liked how we got to see the home of the future. I get a picture in my head how our future is going to look like after seeing the home of the future. I learned that I can work here and that I just have to believe in myself. and be a life long learner. I love coming to these events and they get better each time I come." Hi All We had a fabulous time last week with the young women from Ingraham and Hale HS. They really enjoyed the day and learned so much. Many of them have been writing me to follow up.
